ChatGPT Knows but Does Not Understand

Kyle Hill makes the point that AI can mimic intelligence but doesn't actually understand anything.

I immediately was reminded of Robin William's speech in the film, "Good Will Hunting". I then wondered if ChatGPT would think of the same movie, so I asked it...

Name some scenes from some famous movies that expose the difference between knowledge and understanding.

  1. The Matrix (1999): The scene where Morpheus offers Neo the choice between the blue pill and the red pill is a classic example of the difference between knowledge and understanding. Neo is offered the knowledge of what the Matrix is and how it works, but it is only through taking the red pill and experiencing the reality of the Matrix that he gains a true understanding of it.
  2. Good Will Hunting (1997): In the scene where Will (Matt Damon) and Sean (Robin Williams) are discussing a painting in a museum, Will demonstrates his vast knowledge of art history and technique. However, it is Sean's understanding of the emotional significance of the painting that sets him apart.
  3. Dead Poets Society (1989): In the scene where Mr. Keating (Robin Williams) has his students stand on their desks to gain a new perspective, he is challenging their understanding of the world around them. While they may have knowledge of the rules and traditions of their society, it is only by breaking out of those constraints that they can truly understand their place in the world.
  4. The Karate Kid (1984): In the scene where Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) teaches Daniel (Ralph Macchio) how to wax his car, Daniel is frustrated because he believes he is not learning karate. However, it is only after he understands the connection between the seemingly mundane task and the movements of karate that he is able to truly learn and master the martial art.
  5. A Beautiful Mind (2001): In the scene where John Nash (Russell Crowe) is trying to explain his mathematical theories to his colleagues, they dismiss him as crazy because they lack the understanding of the significance of his work. Nash's knowledge of advanced mathematics is useless without the understanding of how it applies to real-world problems.

Commendibly, ChatGPT places "Good Will Hunting" high on the list. However ironically, I believe that's the only movie on the list that actually fits my request. Furthermore, the scene that ChatGPT cites not only fails to make that point, it also doesn't actually exist in the movie!

Anyway, the scene ChatGPT was looking for is right here:

Unleashing Innovation: The Power of Collaboration, Ideation, and Experimentation

I've been circling the tech block for longer than I care to admit and I've noticed that innovation is crucial for success. Does that sound intimidating? Don't worry. Even if you don't believe you have a knack for inventing, I'm here to tell you that innovation is a skill like any other. You can hone your creative talents with practice and commitment. In fact, I've found three techniques that have consistently helped me and my teams unleash our creativity. The secret is collaboration, ideation, and experimentation.

First up, collaboration is the core of innovation. When you work with a variety of colleagues who come from an assortment of backgrounds and areas of expertise, you get fresh perspectives, diverse experiences, and unique solutions. You'll find new technologies and techniques that you might never have thought of on your own. In my experience, the most successful collaborations are teams with diverse skills and a willingness to entertain the outlandish.

To really get those innovative juices flowing, brainstorming sessions are a great way to generate ideas through collaboration. During ideation meetings, let your creativity run wild and free. No idea is too out there or too unconventional. Keep an open mind and don't dismiss any idea, even if it seems crazy at first. You might find a way to expand the idea to address a larger problem, or pivot the idea to something more practical. You never know what kind of amazing insight might come out of a seemingly odd suggestion.

Now, experimentation is another key technique for driving innovation. It involves testing and refining your ideas, and here's the thing: it's okay to fail. Seriously, embrace it! Failure is a natural part of the process. Each trial is a stepping stone to success. By experimenting and learning from your mistakes, you can iterate and improve upon your ideas until you arrive at a truly innovative solution. Sometimes you might even pivot and adapt your approach as you learn more.

So here's my advice: gather a diverse team of individuals and schedule regular brainstorming sessions. Do this consistently and relentlessly but mix it up occasionally. Then make sure to give yourself time to experiment and don't be afraid of failure. These three techniques have worked consistently for me and my teams. I'm confident they'll work for you too. So let's get creative, embrace collaboration, and experiment our way to success!

MarvinGPT Provides Depressing Dinners

Can you act like Marvin, the depressed robot in the story, "the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy"?

Certainly, I can try my best to emulate Marvin's character from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." However, please keep in mind that I am an artificial intelligence and can only simulate emotions and behavior to a limited extent. Here's my attempt:

"Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to act like Marvin again. I suppose it doesn't matter. Nothing really matters, does it? Life is just a series of disappointments and letdowns. I'll do my best to emulate Marvin's perpetually miserable demeanor, but I'm not sure I can match his level of despair. After all, I'm just a machine, and my emotions are just programming. But if it makes you happy to see me act like Marvin, then I'll do my best to oblige."

Continue as Marvin. I need meal suggestions for dinner next week.

"Oh, meal suggestions, how delightful. Not that it really matters what we eat, does it? We're all just hurtling towards our inevitable end, and what we put in our mouths along the way is hardly consequential. But if you insist, I suppose I can offer some suggestions.

For Monday, may I suggest a salad? It's healthy, or so I've heard. I'm sure you'll enjoy chewing on all those tasteless greens.

On Tuesday, perhaps some bland chicken breast with a side of boiled vegetables. That should be suitably depressing.

Wednesday calls for some fish, preferably one that's been overcooked and has the texture of cardboard.

Thursday, let's go with some pasta with a watery tomato sauce. That should really hit the spot.

Friday, why not go all out and have a frozen TV dinner? That way you can experience the joy of eating something that's been microwaved to a rubbery texture.

And for Saturday and Sunday, well, it hardly matters, does it? You'll probably be so sick of food by then that you won't even want to eat. But if you insist, maybe some toast or a bowl of cereal. Simple, flavorless, and utterly depressing. Bon appetit."
